Complete Cancellation

Students who wish to cancel their registration for a given term must secure written permission from their school dean. The last day for complete cancellation for any student is the same as the last day of the schedule change period for that student. Please consult the Registrar's Calendars for the appropriate date. Students receiving dean's permission for a complete cancellation of registration will receive a full tuition refund minus the required deposit. No record of attendance will be made on the student's transcript for the given term.

Complete Withdrawal

Students who wish to withdraw from school for a given term must secure written permission from their school dean. Students withdrawing from school will receive the appropriate mark of withdrawal (W, WF, or WU) as determined by the school dean's office. Each school has different dates for determining the appropriate mark for withdrawal, so please consult your dean's office for any deadlines.

Prior to withdrawal, students should contact the Office of Financial Aid and the Student Financial Services Office regarding the impact of withdrawing upon their aid and charges. Unofficial withdrawal results in 100% forfeiture of tuition. If a student officially withdraws, the student may be eligible for a tuition adjustment and possible refund of payments depending upon the date of withdrawal. Refunds are only processed for complete withdrawal. Financial aid awards that pay part or all of the student charges are prorated accordingly. Refunds for Federal (Title IV) aid recipients will be prorated in accordance with Federal regulations.

Partial Withdrawal

Students who wish to withdraw from one or more, but not all, courses for which they are enrolled must secure written permission from their school dean. Students withdrawing from one or more courses will receive the appropriate mark of withdrawal (W, WF, or WU) as determined by the school dean's office. Each school has different dates for determining the appropriate mark of withdrawal, so please consult your dean's office for any deadlines. During fall and spring semesters, students receiving dean's permission for a partial withdrawal will receive no tuition refund. During the summer semester only, students receiving dean's permission for a partial withdrawal will receive a partial tuition refund.

Note: If you leave the University for any reason, you are advised to contact the Student Financial Services Office and the Office of Financial Aid to ensure that all financial matters are handled properly. No refunds will be issued until all semester charges are paid in full.

Institutional Tuition Adjustment Schedule

Contact the Student Financial Services Office for the Institutional Tuition Adjustment Schedule (for complete withdrawal).

Cross Registration (ARCHE)

ARCHE Cross Registration is a program developed and sponsored by the Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education. Under certain conditions the program allows students to take a courses at a member institution that may not be offered at the home institution. Students must be full-time and in good standing. Courses are taken on a space available basis. The student is registered at the host institution as a "special" student only. Cross Registration does not constitute regular admission and the student has access only to those facilities needed to successfully complete the course(s).

Emory Students

Emory University students who wish to enroll for courses at an ARCHE member institution must complete a Cross Registration application form and receive approval from their school dean or academic advisor, and the University Registrar. Applications must be received in the Registrar’s Office by the deadline date. There may be other requirements for enrollment (immunization records). Emory Students link here for more information.

Visting Students

Students from other ARCHE member institutions who wish to enroll at Emory University must contact their home institution ARCHE cross registration coordinator for information and application. Visiting students.

Payment Guidelines

Payment for any semester is due approximately ten days before the official start of the term. A schedule of exact dates for posting billing statements to OPUS and payment due dates can be found on the Student Financial Services Office web site under the "Deadlines" menu.

If you are enrolling during the late registration period or drop/add session for your school, payment is due on that day. If payment is not made by the end of the drop/add session, your course schedule may be cancelled.

Billing

Pre-term billing statements are created approximately five weeks prior to the start of each term for students who have registered for classes. Monthly billing statements are posted during the first week of every month for any student with a balance on their account.

All bills are accessible online through the OPUS student system for viewing or printing. It is imperative that you rely on OPUS for billing statements. OPUS and Email are the official communication methods for Emory University. Student Financial Services does not mail billing statements.

Unless specifically enrolled in an Emory Payment Plan, full payment of your student account balance is due by the date indicated on the statement. A 1.25 percent finance charge will be assessed per month on any past due balance.

The Emory Payment Plan is not available for the summer sessions.

Methods of Payment

Payment of tuition and fees may be made by cash, check, online payment, or wire transfer. Instructions for wiring payment directly to a student account are available on the OPUS web site. Credit cards are not accepted for payment of tuition and fees.

Overload and Underload of Hours for Emory College of Arts & Sciences Students

Students may enroll for twelve to nineteen hours in any one semester. To take more or fewer hours, they must have permission from their faculty adviser and a dean in the Office for Undergraduate Education. Students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and seniors in their final semester of work are permitted to take up to twenty-two hours (not counting physical education). Students with outstanding incomplete course grades may not overload in credit hours in subsequent semesters. Students must normally enroll for the minimum full-time load of twelve hours, except that a senior in the final semester of work is not required to enroll for more hours than are needed to complete the degree. Emory College of Arts & Sciences students may not take fewer than 12 hours or more than 19 hours in a fall or spring semester without special permission from the dean. Go to White Hall Room 300 to request such permission.

Course Numbering

In general, a course numbered 499 or lower is an undergraduate course. Undergraduate courses are normally numbered as follows:

100 Freshman Level

200 Sophomore Level

300 Junior Level

400 Senior Level

Courses numbered 500 or higher are graduate courses. Graduate courses are normally numbered as follows:

500 Masters Level

700 PhD Level

  • A course number ending in A or B indicates a "Sequence" course, usually an undergraduate Honors sequence in which both parts must be completed to earn full credit for the sequence.
  • A supervision course number ending in R is repeatable for credit. Courses most commonly in this category are Directed Study, Research and Seminar courses. A Special Topics course is repeatable when the topic changes.
  • A course number ending in S indicates a course that is a post-Freshman seminar, whose three-digit course number is other than 190, 191.
  • WR indicates a course that satisfies the post-freshman writing requirement in the College General Education Curriculum (Fall 1998).

The provisions of this course offering listing are subject to change without notice and do not constitute an irrevocable contract between any student and the University.
